Start Your Day Right
Kick off your Labor Day hike with breakfast at Snake River Roasting Co. Their locally roasted coffee and variety of breakfast choices provide the perfect fuel for a day on the trails. On your way to the trailhead, grab a sandwich from Creekside Market & Deli to enjoy during your hike. Finish your day with a celebratory craft beer and delicious meal on the roof-deck at Dornan’s in the park, or Snake River Brewing in town.

Easy
Emily Stevens Park Loop
- Distance: 2.5 miles round trip
- Elevation Gain: Minimal
- Trailhead: Emily Stevens Park
- Park Pass: Not required
This easy loop trail leads you through the scenic landscape of Emily Stevens Park, offering beautiful views of the Snake River and the surrounding wetlands. The well-maintained path is perfect for families, beginners, and anyone looking for a peaceful, leisurely walk. The park also features picnic areas, so you can enjoy a relaxing lunch amidst nature.
Taggart Lake Loop
- Distance: 3.8 miles round trip
- Elevation Gain: 400 feet
- Trailhead: Taggart Lake Trailhead

This family-friendly hike offers stunning views of the Teton Range and a serene lake setting. The trail weaves through forests and meadows, and is suitable for beginners. Keep an eye out for wildlife and enjoy the reflections of the mountains in the clear waters of Taggart Lake.
Moderate
Jenny Lake
- Distance: 7.1 miles round trip
- Elevation Gain: 450 feet
- Trailhead: Jenny Lake Trailhead
- Park Pass: Required
Jenny Lake offers stunning views every step of the way and is a great option for those looking to get more mileage without a drastic elevation change. This trail offers a mix of shaded paths and exposed rocky sections, providing a balanced hike for intermediate hikers. If you want to cut this hike short, there is a boat-shuttle available to take you across the lake for a fee.
Josie’s Ridge
- Distance: 3.4 miles round trip
- Elevation Gain: 1,200 feet
- Trailhead: Josie’s Ridge
- Park Pass: Not required
A locals’ favorite for a post-work hike! The steep ascent to the top of Josie’s Ridge is well worth the challenge for the stunning view of the town, valley, and surrounding mountains. Bonus: it is dog-friendly, and if you are staying in Jackson, the trailhead is very close.
Strenuous
Paintbrush Canyon to Cascade Canyon Loop
- Distance: 19 miles round trip
- Elevation Gain: 4,100 feet
- Trailhead: String Lake Trailhead
- Park Pass: Required
This demanding hike takes you through some of the most scenic areas in the park. The loop includes alpine meadows, glacially-carved canyons, and high mountain passes. The views from Paintbrush Divide and Lake Solitude are unparalleled. Do not forget to pack extra layers as temperatures fluctuate with elevation change.
Alaska Basin
- Distance: 16.2 miles round trip
- Elevation Gain: 3,500 feet
- Trailhead: Teton Canyon Trailhead
- Park Pass: Not required
A challenging hike that rewards with stunning scenery. The trail ascends through forests and meadows to reach the expansive Alaska Basin. Be prepared for a long day and changing weather conditions.

General Packing List for Hikers
Regardless of the hike you choose, being prepared is essential. Here’s a general packing list to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable hike:
- Water: Bring more than you think you need
- Food: Snacks and your Creekside sandwich
- Clothing: Moisture-wicking layers, a warm jacket, and a rain shell
- Footwear: Comfortable sneakers with good traction will do on the more mild trails, but we highly recommend sturdy hiking boots for the strenuous hikes
- Sun Protection: Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm with SPF
- First Aid Kit: Including blister treatment
- Bear Spray: Available to rent through Outpost. We recommend this on all hikes, especially in GTNP
